FUN WITH LOCAL HISTORY’ : Five games using role-play

Five games using role-play and cards : Upper Primary school to Adults.


An education series exploring European settlement in Australia through game playing and hypothetical scenarios, incorporating factual events and real characters from the times. 


The series combines role playing scripts with card games to explore key aspects of the life and times of the early European settlement of Victoria in the first coastal towns of Melbourne, Portland, Port Fairy and Warrnambool.  


The series is consistent with the Victorian and Australian Curriculum for History.  Teachers may also find the contents useful in other subject areas such as Drama, English, Geography and Mathematics.

Land Hunger: Port Phillip, 1835 by Glen Foster

The setting of this game is in the Port Phillip District of New South Wales in 1835. 

The aims of the game are to: 

  • find out about some aspects of John Batman’s Treaty; 
  • compare some European and Indigenous peoples’ customs and beliefs;  
  • participate in card games based on Indigenous Dreamtime stories;  
  • eliminate the other players and win the games: 
  • players have an equal chance of winning each game.

Land Hunger: Melbourne, 1837 by Glen Foster

The setting of this game is in the Port Phillip District of Melbourne in 1837. 

The aims of the game are to: 

  • find out about some of the events leading up to the first sale of land in Melbourne;   
  • purchase as many allotments during the auction as possible;   
  • eliminate the other players and win the game:
  • each player has an equal chance of winning the game.

Land Hunger: Portland, 1843 by Glen Foster

The setting of this game is the Victorian coastal township of Portland in 1843. 

 The aims of the game are to:

  •  find out about early European settlement in Portland and have fun with history;
  • accumulate wealth by investing in town land, 
  • export local produce, hunt whales, avoid  fines and sleuthing
  • eliminate the other players and win the game.

Land Hunger: Belfast 1851 by Glen Foster

The setting of the game is the Victorian coastal township of Port Fairy or Belfast as it was known in 1851. 

The aims of the game are to: 

  • find out about early European settlement in Belfast and have fun with history; 
  • accumulate wealth by investing in town land and local produce, 
  • discover gold, avoid fines and bushrangers;
  • eliminate the other players and win the game.

Land Hunger: Warrnambool, 1856 by Glen Foster

The setting of this game is the Victorian coastal township of Warrnambool in 1856. 

The aims of the game are to: 

  • find out about the early European settlement in Warrnambool and have fun with history;  
  • accumulate wealth by borrowing money and paying the least amount of interest;
  • investing in town land and selling at a profit; 
  • winning prize money from racing your horses,  agricultural shows and playing cricket and football matches; avoiding fines; investing minimal amounts in local companies and paying minimal donations; 
  • accumulate the most money, or play an optional elimination game, to win the game.
